So, this is the first pass at the Ulvar. It is not edited and having looked over the stat mods in table format (and some other points) we will most definitely need some editing. Alan, that is normal, i do the same with my stuff. ;)

So, here it is in PDF in the Races Chapter layout.

Oh WOW

it is really quite something to see them there in black and white, with their stats all lined out with the other races (and by caste)

going to have a good read of it in a mo
rushing around at work right now :D

I have no problem with you editing it in any fashion you see fit Bill

not a problem :D

If there is anything you want me to do re. Ulvar please let me know
and I can get on it, (in between other stuf fof course, we are at least getting closer to
publication for our WW2 rules now, hooray :D , don't know how we're going to publish but I guess we'll figure something out
it's all for charity so we may end up just skimming them out at work and hope no one notices  )

life seems to be forever just one thing after another :D

Hmmm, thought (if I can sneak it out in my work breaks) I might put in a couple of possible (my suggestions only)
changes as I see them, I cant help tweaking so please ignore me if I am getting to be too much of a pain
hope you dont think I am trying to teach you to suck eggs, EEK
just wanted to help

RACES TITLE

"... the Gren are the only ones with
distinctive differences in abilities."
I guess it should read
"The Gren and the Ulvar are..."

HOMEWORLD
I am at a loss as to this one, I am guessing you will know best as to where you want them in the Neb

SPECIAL ABILITIES
(love the way you included and named the 'Boneswipe' :)
I think your rules for it are perfect

re their vision and such

"thus most Ulvar rarely keep their
heads still, constantly moving them from side to side order
to increase their perception of their environment"

I would change this to read "... to increase their spatial awarness" much better :)

I wonder if we need to add a mechanic to facilitate the fact that they are easily surprised (or do you reckon the almost constand head motion should negate this?)

ULCAR CASTE TRAINING BONUS
Yep, you narrowed this down perfectly Bill, thanks 8)

Would add 'Prounounced "Oolvar" somewhere  :D

the HAGA need fitted in here

"The inward looking nature of the Ulvar mindset has only
been exacerbated by their first contact with an alien race,
the disasterous meeting with the –---- that resulted in the
Ul var ---- war where the Ul var race was very nearly
extinguished."

HISTORY

great
needs dated yet
"their history as it pertains to the Nebuleon itself
only goes back a mere ---- years"

Guess I really should Stat up a ‘Knobbler’ sometime too, it could always break loose from the Zoo, end up (somehow) in a cargo hold and spread to the Neb proper, heh,heh you never can tell :D
and I guess ‘Phipreta’ and the ‘Khani’ burgers could always be an interesting 'treat' :)

but, I am getting away from myself here and a tad over excited with it all I think

darn, gotta get back to work

Just listening to the new BBC Blake's 7 audio cd The Way back/Cygnus ALpha

and the planet
Saurian Major (where they land to find Cally) sounds like a good fit for the Ulvar homeworld

"Everything was red, the sky, the terrain, the vegetation, even the air they breathed"

"what is it he asked, staring about him, is it something in the atmosphere?
Blake was getting his bearings, Yes he answered offhandedly, there's an upper layer gas strata that filters out the other parts of the spectrum and gives everything a reddish hue"

Oh, it has sentient plants too (some of which are carnivorous), mostly with warm, clammy, fleshy leaves

OK the book takes it too far and everything gets tainted red, even their skin (that cant work cause you have different coloured Ulvar but heck, the basic idea works I think)
that just sounds cool to me(plus it means the warrior ulvar are naturally camoflaged for their environment)

So, my feeling would be to make whatever planet in the Neb the Ulvar get to call home like this

but I am happy enough to let you do what you want too 8)

of course, I can see flaw in my reasoning here

if the atmosphere taints everything red (ie. makes it appear red)
then surely 'red' isnt the real color of everything, take a red Ulvar off planet and he will look a differeent color surely?!

the yellow/brown Ulvar etc probably wont be yellow or brown bu t a color that make sthem look yellow or brown under the tainted red atmosphere of the homeworld

hmmm, tricky

Just hd a thought

is this cheesy? but maybe the Ulvar warrior caste should have a war cry, something like
"For the Race!" in their own language of course :D

have to make it up, is this a worthwhile flavor or too much?

Maybe, if we go this route the Ulvar
could have a list of tenets, part of their holy book
kind of like a 10 commandments, that could be written out somewhere
(might be useful in helping folks play them too)

I suppose things like

1. The race is all, you are but a part of the greater whole, the whole is everything
a true servant of the race puts the good of the whole before that of himself

that kind of thing

The battle cry is fine but I would make it slightly different for the different castes.

As to the commandments, the problem here is you begin drifting back to a monolithic culture. Think about it this way, what would be the human commandments? ;)

yeah, you're right, drop the commandments 8)

I kind of think that only the warrior caste would have a war cry, there woukld really be no reason for any of the other castes to have one as they are not warriors

it is possible though that the Dalieta just might althouth they would probably shout "S$"% the race" or somesuch

if they had a war cry at all, which, given their background they very well might, they probably had a fair few 'bandits' in the hills and stuff fighting and robbing their fello w Ulvar - perhaps along the lines of the 'thuggee' cult in India. Only problem with this of course is that it goes directly against all that 'ritualised, non lethal' combat stuff that is in the background, but then, being untouchables, I suppose that really would;nt apply to them (of course, equally all this non lethal stuff might only apply amongst 'true' Ulvar, ie. Ulvar that are members of a recognised caste, Ulvar society as a whole might have treated the Dalieta appallingly down the centuries and they might not consider the slaying of a Dalieta as killing seeing as how they are not really human 'Ulvar' and all)

News on the Ulvar front. Mark Brooks, who did the race illos in Neb core rules, has signed on to do the Ulvar (amongst others) illos. I look forward to seeing his sketches.

Very good news indeed! I'm loking forward to seeing the Ulvar fleshed out. Mark has done some very good work for you in the past, so I'm sure we won't be disappointed.
