I just got sent the early sketches of the Ulvar by the extremely talented Mark Brooks 8)

brilliant is all I can say, he is almost spot on
we talked about what changes we both felt were required and we have come to a
happy medium, I am really looking forward to seeing what the second version will look like

I would post the sketch up here but I dont know how to

I just started reading "The Uplift War" by David Brin,

great book but boy am I glad I made up the Ulvar before I started to read this,
the GUBRU are a great avian race but luckily the Ulvar are not too similar to them
(and any similarities are most definetly accidental)

sayint that, if it wasnt too cheesy there would be plenty cool ideas to nick, sorry, borrow
for the Ulvar from them, giving the Ulvar soldiers individual Gravity Belts to allow them to fly for one 8)

hmm, its a problem isnt it, you dont want to copy other peoples work, but if they have so many cool ideas you
start to think maybe no one would mind if you dipped in a little

I dunno

Dude, I face this in Neb all the time. There is only so much "new" out there. Most of what you think is original has been done by someone else so I would not sweat it. The thing is, you need to make a cool setting and the Ulvar are a good addition tot he Neb setting.

Thanks Bill,
I'm finding this out right now to be honest, I wrote a brief article on
"Booze in Traveller" 8) for the British Isles Traveller Support magazine about a year ago
(it looks like it may go to press soon if all goes well) but now it is being questioned re. copyright and people are saying that they have seen this work before on the TML

heck, it was all my own work and now people are saying its a copy of other peoples work

I think this is exactly as you say, only so many ideas out there and eventually you will hit on something that has already been done (even if you are not aware of it)

Anyhow, I really like the Ulvar and I am really chuffed that you picked up on them, looking forward to seeing the finished product big time 8)

Well, still reading (and enjoying 8) ) the Uplift War
but, get this, isnt this just typical, it turns out that the Gubru (bird race)
have no sense of humour!!!!

thats just what I put in for the Ulvar and I had never even read this book :(

sheesh, well, if people want to think I copied it fine, it still works fine as far as I can see

Alan,
Not a problem from my point of view. The big thing here is a lot of the same concepts evolve. In RPGs we call it parallel evolution. You get it in system design as well as setting. Meh.

The Ulvar are a cool addition and that is what matters. ;)

Thanks Bill,
Phew' wipes sweat from brow

I havent ever heard of 'Parallel Evolution' before but now that you mention it
it does make a lot of sense, (and I can see it in some systems too)

big relief,

anyhow, hope things are going smoothly over there for you

over here my friend and I just started a 'Games Company' called
'Drunken Badger' (primarily to write RPG material)

I am hopeful but not putting all my expectations into this
as I just dont know how serious everyone is and how realistic an endeavour this
could really be (heck, I am STILL caught up with our WW2 game so dont really have a lot of time on
my hands to get involved)

I would like to see it work out though (even if only so we can go to Gencon next year :)

Still loving the work on the Ulvar here, Mark did some great art (some things I would change mind you :) )

kind of lost touch with folks over here so I aint working on Drunken Badger anymore, boo hoo

and the darn WW2 game seems to have run to a finish, darn, the guys have put it up for free (well, give a donation to charity download)
download but it could do with a kick up the ass to get thigns moving (and I was rather hoping they would actually publish the darn thing)
