Hey Alan, yeah, I have to say I have been taking a break for a bit...well, more than a bit. The consulting side of HinterWelt has been doing a bit too well but that really is not it. I just feel a bit...out of modern gaming and what it seems to be becoming. What I mean is on one side you have WOTC approach which seems to have less and less to do with the hobby I got into over 30 years ago. It seems focused on something more like a board game or maybe a really sad version of a CRPG. On the other side you have a cliquish group of small press that have evolved away from what I value as a business man and a gamer. It seems to be, and I could definitely be wrong, more about impressing a microcosm of online denizens than about running a tight solid ship from a game publishing POV. It just has turned me off for a bit to publishing a game in that environment. I would need to be involved somehow in one or the other and I chose neither. I apologize since we have some publications in mid swing that have ground to a halt because of it. The two chief amongst them being Neb SE and All Squirrels Must Be Eaten. To a lesser extent, Zombipocalypse/Infected is also in this state.

I can't tell you when I will or even if, and I know that kind of sucks but it is a rather sad point to me. I wish it could be different. I also won't say that the market or hobby is doomed but more it is a case of it growing away from me or me growing away from it.

On a positive site, I thought of a pretty cool Neb adventure the other day where you have a group of Marines (or maybe just some free trader sin the wrong place) that are sent in to rescue a RFW survey team who went to a world that appears dead. Advanced tech structures and all but cities seem deserted. They land to find small furtive groups of natives who seem to be living in a primitive state (scavengers on the tech of the cities but not as much as you would think). They are all mute, victims of a plague. They show the Marines the horror that is their word, a world of "living" dead. For about 40 years they have battled the various forms of dead that plague their world. They are resistant to scans and any of the "living" dead brought down are shown to have absolutely no explanation of why they were mobile. Just as they are about to bug out, the transport is attacked and destroyed. Their only way out is the surveyor ship parked in orbit and they need to get to an ancient shuttle hoping it will work.

I think it has potential.

So, yeah, sorry about the silence but it has been a discouraging summer for me.

Bill

Hey Bill,
really good to hear from you, sorry for this late reply (but my life is still a bit of a mess so had no time to check and such, my friends are still of the opinion that my 'hoarding' needs to be stopped and have been selling off all, well most of, my gaming and cd collections, sure I need the money to help repair my flat but its not what I want, currently hoping that when this is all, finally, done I will still have my WW2 books and AD&D at least, thought htey want me to 'trm' my collections)

Anyhow, enough of my problems, it is good to hear from you, I tend to think you are right about the hobby, it's not the same naymore, its not about 'fun', its all about making money, there's no 'genuineness' (is that a word) left anymore (for the most part, some companies still have it  ) This 'new' shiny, all full color all glossy all miniature dependant gaming (and dont get me started on the card games) is just noooooot my thing, I'm old

I hope you can stick with it and continue to produce GREAT games (If only because I'm selfish and want to see NEB 2, and those mad and bad birdies of course :D )

I think your adventure has potential too, certainly

Anyhow, as I say, sorry for the late reply, just life as ever getting in the way
Hoping you get your enthusiasm back sooner rather than later

Best wishes

Alan Hume

P.s. If you ever need to (or want to  ) contact me about anything here is my email address

Hi again Bill,
I just wanted to say I hope this isnt the end for your gaming enterprises, Hinterwelt is waaaaaaaaaay too cool to just fade away, I really, really like your games.

I just asked my mate Liam (from Black Lion Games in Edinburgh) if he can put aside the copy of Roma Imperious that i found in his second hadn section for me (I'm buying second hand cos im skint  )

it looks great

I have been noodling on my setting for awhile now - after many life changes coming and going. It is hard to stay on one task for long. But as long as you keep plugging away - even very slowly - its of value. I find that when I come back each time to my project - I reread and re-evaluate what I had done in my last sessions lol... which is a mistake for me LOL. Anyhow I will start posting my stuff up for review. With fall and winter bearing down - the long dark and grey days will have me inside most of the time - so I should have moments to get back to work lol.

Bottom line - keep up the excellent work - take breaks... but don't give up... I really do find checking in here helps me focus and keep my chin up when things get to dragging.

Well, glad you could stop by Don. I talk about your Havoc Cover all the time.

No, Alan, this is not the end but more an intermission. I need time to regroup and try to decide what to do with the publishing effort. It might become something different or it might just proceed at a slower pace (yeah, hard to believe it can go slower).

Roma is a good book, I think one of my best.

Thanks,
Bill

I was seeing this as more of a hibernation. . . it's been a long cold winter. Stay hungry.
