I think that the ability to buy your way into another caste is contrary to their devout belief in reincarnation/destiny.
Maybe every king gets to choose one exemplary citizen for a promotion on Vayaths holiday. This would lead people to try to be good citizens. Another reason why outcasts are so rare.

Hollow bones would not necessarily mean weak bones. If they were triangular they would be very strong. This would fit into their angular look and architecture.

that would work, still think they will need to have SOLID, DENSE BONY PLATES
on the top of their heads, maybe they could have stronger neck muscles to compensate

yep, drop the buying int o a better caste idea
not worth ruining the other idea for it

gives Ulvar PC's an actual chance of progression too (ie, perform a secret mission get promoted)
instead of forcing themn all to be outcasts

jsut a few ideas

i figure that the commander of all the Ulvar armed forces should be the HIGH KNG and his title (when wearing this particular hat) should be SUPREME COMMANDER

I figure the Ulvar should have a Navy (space) maybe not wet, do they have oceans on their planet ? if they do then I guess they need a navy otherwise not

Army
Marines? not sure, maybe the "Kings Guard" (with the powered armour) serve as onboard soldiers upon naval vessels
air force, again not sure, but probably I think they would use the same fighters as the navy as they will be streamlined and thus able to operate within an atmosphere

Thinking about the Ulvar Navy, I guess it should have one (suitably) mega flagship (kind of the size of Darth Vaders super, super stardestroyer) and a range of other vessels, the Battleships might look like a
Klingon bird of prey if it had been put through a blender with a ton of Manga comics :D

I think that DEATHWING
would be a great name for this particular type of ship (thats the English version of the name of course, no idea yet what the Ulvar name owuld be, I havent worked out any form of language for them yet, should use the same sort of letters though and sound the same then it could work)

Or, maybe, a DEATHWING is like a suicide squad, much like the Kamikaze of Japan (and the Germans had a similar flight too, named after that Spartan King at Thermopolae I think)

I think their fighters could look maybe like a manga version of a boomerang, all sharp angles
with a cockpit attached (would it be too much like Star Wars to offset the cockpit and put it not central but out on one of the wings?)

I have some cheesy names for the fighters, but, like I say, they are cheesy and have probably been used before

Raptor (used in Battlestar Galactica I think)
Talon (used elsewhere I think)

Claw
Axebeak (hey its from AD&D but it sounds cool)
Starbeak (cheesola :D )

Ripclaw

Render

Ripjack

all just ideas

You know, the more I think about it the more I like the idea of the "Deathwing" being a fighter squadron of Kamikaze pilots

I dont know if it would mess up the background though, as maybe there would be no reason for any other fighters/soldiers not to be kamikaze due to the belief in reincarnation (but I think they should just generally fight like fanatics, not suicidal I'm sure there is a difference

otherwise, you could jsut have the whole army line up and charge towards the enemy, not what we are looking for

I like the idea o fthem being fanatical fighters and having a special "Kamikaze" fighter wing (used predominatnly to ram enemy capital ships and such like)

basically, if it is not in too much bad taste, you could expand upon this by using the Japanese (and German) Kamikaze as a template

considered sacrosanct I dunno

The Deathwings could be outcasts that have volunteered to atone for their mistakes. They believe that by sacrificing themselves for the greater good of Ulvar society, they will be re-instated to their former caste when they are reincarnated. I think this would fit them in nicely without being in poor taste, since they believe in reincarnation. This would also give the Ulvar something constructive to do with the outcasts. Maybe because they don't have any prisons, just jails for overnight stays. How about minor offenses get you a tattoo on their beaks that wears off in about fifty days. It would bring much shame to anyone. Perhaps this is too much information, oh well.

Hmmm, I like the idea a lot
but it wouldnt be a good idea to change the blurb we already have for the outcastes, for one thing, the outcast(e) should be too numerous to all be sent off to die in the DEATHWING,

plus, many would not want to, they are outcastes for a reason, they dont particularly like or agree with Ulvar society, sure they believe in the gods and all that, but you ask any downtrodden citizen (or one who believes that he is downtrodden) if he likes his society and his answer will most likely be negative

I also dont want to lose the ritual scarring that goes on with the Ulvar outcasts bony skull plates, that idea is really one I like and I just dont want to lose it

I just think that the DEATHWING could be an option available to ALL outcastes although I do not think many would take it up as an option, so, in any given war they probably only ever manage to patch together enough for one or two DEATHWING assualts in the entire conflict.

I do like your idea there a whole lot though, it really fits perfectly, I just want to fit it in over what we already have though if possible and not change anything

hmm, just reading your post again,
I reckon they should have prisons, but it should be just like a case of
an outcast serves his time as punishment but upon release he is still an outcaste of course, so he is free to wander and pursue his existence as an outcaste (complete with all that that entails)
generally speaking, maybe the outcast scarring ritual could be something done before a miscreant is taken to the actual prison itself, done by the priests at a shrine or whatnot

certainly, most outcasts should be free to do what they want until said time they are convicted of a crime

I kind of think the beak tattoo idea (while it is a good idea)
would probably confuse things and so it probably is a step too far

No problems! I realize that half of my ideas are brilliant, and the other half crap.
I wasn't trying to insinuate that all Ulvar outcastes automatically were sent to a Deathwing squad, just that it would be an option.
I see your point of it not being feasible to have no prisons, it was just an odd thought.
I just throw any ideas I have out there and you are free to use what you like and ignore what you don't like.

No more crap than my own

I like your ideas and vallue your input, this project is half yours and half mine
bouncing stuff between us has got it this far

Yep, I just throw ideas out there too
I like working that way, it gets the idea out there for consideration while its
still fresh in your mind, so good or bad, useable or unusable it gets it out there for
consideration

guess its kind of like polishing a stone, we keep the good stuff and get rid of the rest

Hmmm,
you know what, I don't know how I missed this before, but the Droyne in Traveller are all caste based too
you think we can still make the Ulvar caste based or is this too much alike?

Don't get too hung up on similarities. Really, if it makes sense and you integrate it into your race, you are just doing a good job of description. You will always copy something somewhere. If it was not Traveler then it would have been the Hindu Caste system.
